Heidelberg, Germany ~ My Army Time There And Some Scenic Views ~ Best Watched In HD

PLEASE READ THIS VIDEO DESCRIPTION !!!

First, I want to tell you about the audio. Every weekend (Saturday), this club we (my Army buddies AND I) went to all of the time it’s called Carnaby Disco in Heidelberg, Germany. The DJ there Din (Dean) Diste played at 16:00 hours (4:00 in the afternoon) the “Hot 19 ~ 19 Hits with Din.

The songs as you might have heard are mostly from the ‘Super Hit Parade’ but Carnaby patrons also voted what there favorite song was. There were prizes, dance contests and games. One of my favorite games Din did was “guess the record”, where Din would play a second or 2 of a song and if you were the first to guess correctly, you won a free drink or a cash prize. I did pretty well in that game! I also placed second one time in a dance contest.

I was stationed at Neckarsulm, Germany from May of 1975 to June of 1978.
Heidelberg is about 60K from Neckarsulm.
I still miss those great times today and would love to take Diane over there and show her a wonderful country, eat some great food and see the sights including the Heidelberg castle.

Oktoberfest:
Oktoberfest is a sixteen-day festival held each year in Munich, Germany during late September (and running to early October). It is one of the most famous events in Germany and the world’s largest fair, with some six million people attending every year, and is an important part of Bavarian culture. Other cities across the world also hold Oktoberfest celebrations, modeled after the Munich event.

The Munich Oktoberfest, traditionally, takes place during the sixteen days up to and including the first Sunday in October. In 1994, the schedule was modified in response to German reunification so that if the first Sunday in October falls on the 1st or 2nd, then the festival will go on until October 3 (German Unity Day). Thus, the festival is now 17 days when the 1st Sunday is October 2 and 18 days when it is October 1. The festival is held on an area named the Theresienwiese (field, or meadow, of Therese), often called d Wiesn for short.

Visitors also eat huge amounts of food, most of it traditional hearty fare such as Hendl (chicken), Schweinsbraten (roast pork), Haxn (knuckle of pork), Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), Würstel (sausages) along with Brezeln (Pretzel), Knödeln (potato or bread dumplings), Käsespätzle (cheese noodles), Reiberdatschi (potato pancakes), Sauerkraut or Rotkraut (red cabbage) along with such Bavarian delicacies as Obatzda (a fatty, spiced cheese-butter concoction) and Weisswurst (a white sausage).

Fasching:
The Roman Catholic Shrovetide carnival as celebrated in German-speaking countries. There are many regional differences concerning the name, duration, and activities of the carnival. It is known as Fasching in Bavaria, Austria and in southern Germany, Fosnat in Franconia, Fasnet in Swabia, Fastnacht in Mainz and its environs, and Karneval in Cologne and the Rhineland. The beginning of the pre-Lenten season generally is considered to be Epiphany (January 6), but in Cologne, where the festivities are the most elaborate, the official beginning is marked on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year. Merrymaking may get underway on the Thursday before Lent, but the truly rambunctious revelry associated with Fasching usually reaches its high point during the three days preceding Ash Wednesday, culminating on Shrove Tuesday. The names of these final days also vary regionally.

Where I was stationed in Neckarsulm and in Heidelberg, this time was most commonly known as Fasching.

    Hi~Michael,

    Hi~Michael,
    No, she has no picture.
When I took this, it was with one of those Polaroid instamatic cameras that the picture comes out and then you watch it develop right in front of you.
I just asked her to ‘pose’ and she agreed.
I took the picture, thanked her and she went on her way.
She never even saw the picture develop.
I never thought about this until now but the picture was for a card company (like HallMark here) and I wonder if she ever saw herself in a card. Hmmmm……
    Thanks :)

    I* learned to speak …
I* learned to speak German while I was there in the Army because I believe if you are in someone’s country, you should speak their language.
Just as I believe that with all of the Spanish speaking people, they should speak English here.
However since I haven’t spoke German now for over 30 years, I forgot it all.
I have a language translation software program that I use since YouTube is global and many languages are spoken.
    Thanks for watching :)
