i just bought a crate for my lab, is this a good idea

Yes! This is a very good idea! Crate training is good for any puppy of any age!

Use the crate like a bedroom, not as punishment. A puppy should feel safe and content in the crate.

If you are using it as a house training tool, block off most of the crate so the puppy only has enough room to turn around and lay down. This will prevent the puppy from peeing in one corner of the crate and sleeping in the other.

Dog don’t like to soil in their dens, so it will be easier for you to control the puppies potty breaks with proper crate training.

While the puppy is still young, do not put any blankets or bedding in the crate, he could chew them up and ingest them (very dangerous!) Also, if he does have a accident in the crate, the bedding will soak it up and the puppy will not see what he’s done wrong.

If your puppy is anxious and unhappy in the crate at first, don’t give in and let him out! Go to the pet store and get a kong and a nylabone. These are two toys that are crate safe. You can stuff the kong with canned puppy food or 100% canned pumpkin and then put it in the freezer over night, this will keep him occupied while in the crate, and it is also great for teething too!!

Also remember to take the puppies collar off every time it is in the crate, you don’t want his tags to get stuck in the bars and accidentally choke himself.

My dog is very agressive to people he dosnt know I am looking into a behavioralist but I was wondering if there are any DVD’s or books or anything that WORKS. I love my dog but if he bites another person he will be put down

Why put off the invevitble,Life is too short to put up with an aggressive dog.

There is a fabulous solution for taking care of this, it is called a trip to the vet and a shot.

There is no self help for a dog like this. Either spend the money for a real dog trainer or put the dog to sleep.

16 week old yellow lab does a few tricks.

EDIT: Since we posted this video many people have suggested that Jack is overweight or that we feed him too many treats. The treats were ONLY given for training. His weight is due to him being on Prednisone for Puppy Strangles at the time this video was shot. He is not then or has ever been overfed.

Jack is of the English Lab variety.

As for his training we had him enrolled in “puppy school” and this taught us how to teach him. He is a quick learner and was often able to complete a trick after being shown a few times.

As of now (March, 2009) Jack is almost 2 1/2 and is still a beloved member of our family.

Thanks for your comments and well wishes,
