I live in Wisconsin, so driving in the snow/sleet/slush is inevitable. I bought a car this summer (a 1992 VW Passat wagon), and was told the wiper fluid wouldn’t squirt out. After buying the car, I took it to my mechanic (who my family and I have used for YEARS, and we love and trust 100%), and they said it was a wiring issue that wouldn’t be worth the money to fix.
I’m just wondering if it’s possibly something I could try to fix on my own (or with a mechanically-inclined friend’s help), or what other alternatives there are.
A local service shop down the road sells and installs heated wiper blades- has anyone had any experience with these?
I’m afraid I’ll have to stick with using water bottles full of washer fluid in the event I end up in an unfortunate circumstance (I have a bunch on my front seat just in case, but would never put myself in the position of driving when I know the weather may get bad).
Thanks for any help you can offer!.
I was afraid to hear I need a new mechanic
I guess in the back of my head, I was thinking the same thing, though.
Thank you so much for the input!
If somebody is good with electrical troubleshooting, they could fix it for you, if they wnated to, it s alot of work taking apart dash panels and probing wires, you might be able to convince somebody somehow, by like gogin down on them or somethign, there some serious time involved crawling and reachign all aroudn the tiny nooks fo the car scrunched in awkward tiny possitions.
Most people arnt good with electrical diagnosis though, it may be hard to find sombody confident enough to do it, and who actually knows how to use a multimeter
If the problem is in fact a wiring issue, it may cost several hundred dollars in labor to effectively REPAIR the wiring to what it was previously. by taking it to a shop.
Wiper fluid can fail for other reasons though, your shop could be wrong, but bad wiring is a possible less common cause, if i determined the pump wasnt getting power, i would HIGHLY suspect the fuse, so go double check the fuse and verify its good, if not, i would then suspect a harness somewhere has come unpluged, after that i would begin probing individual points to isolate it.
One alternative though is to use the existing pump, wiring clip and wires that are currently on the pump, clip them, and add a new circuit to power them, you could just get some wire, and a switch and put the switch somewhere inside your car, it woudlnt cost very much at all, a shop probibly wont do it because its rather unprofessional.
If i did it, i woudl wire it with some relays tapping off exhisting circuits in my car and make the wiper pump run when i honked the horn and had my highbeams on, id laugh everytime i had to clean my windsheild and the pains of fixing it would long be forgotten. "HOOOOOOOOOOONK…squeek, squeek, squeek, HOOOOOOOOOOOnnnnk….."
Bets of luck in your quest to have clean windows

There seems to be a problem with my windscreen wipers on my VW Golf mark 4 ( year 2000 ). When I switch them on the blades very very slowly just about make it from one side to the other. Yesterday they stopped completely but now just about very slowly work. Does anyone have any suggestions, Im thinking maybe a problem with the wiper motor but cars are not my strong point. Thank you for any suggestions
This is typical of a wiper motor with worn internal brushes. Although an auto electrician can replace them, spares are not readily available due to low demand as most people simply replace the unit.
A new one can be expensive, but used ones are available from around £20. See link below for a used and tested one complete with linkage assembly currently on the UK eBay site for £25 (I’m nothing to do with the seller, BTW!)

I have a 95′ Camaro and when i turn the wipers on they both miss a big spot where the lower left side of the blade meets the windshield. I have tried just about every blade out there from the cheap to the new high end Bosch. I have even called a couple of manufactures to see if they have a fix but the said due to the curvature of my windshield they do not have a blade that could hug the curvature of my windshield. Any idea of any fix or a wiper out there that could preform a lot better?
Make sure the metal tips that hold the blade in place are not too close to the ends. This will cause the blade to bow instead of follow the contour of the glass. Also, pull the arms away from the glass, and bend the wiper end of the arm closer to the windshield. This will increase the pressure of the blade. Do both these things, and your wipers will not miss a single spot. Hope this helped you and good luck!
