How To Brew Beer At Home – pt 1 – Sanitation

Here I am brewing a Coopers Stout. I am going to document all the steps. I am using the Coopers Beer Brewing Kit.

I suggest NOT to get this brew kit.

Get a classic SINGLE bucket kit.
Then get 2 x 32oz (1L) EZ Cap glass bottles.

This will make the process 100x easier. My crazy rinsing and cleaning is because of the coopers kit and the type of plastic that the coopers kit uses.

If you have a classic fermentation bucket, then you will have a much easier time and a stronger food grade plastic that light does not pass through.

Blueberries were frozen variety from Walmart, nuked in the microwave on 5 minutes assuming they’re still frozen.

Cost Breakdown:
The extract and the hops ran me right at $13 here locally. I already had the yeast on hand but figure another $2 for that. The honey is optional but I buy honey in bulk so that cost me $6 for 4#. The Blueberries were $3. Total cost was about $24 for this 6 gallon batch. Of course I already own the brewing kit and supplies and the bottles to bottle the beer.

If you want a cost per bottle breakdown assume you’re going to lose about 1/2 gallon to sediment so that puts total volume of finished beer at 5.5 gallons. Standard US beer bottles are 12 fluid ounces. 5.5 gallons = 704 fluid ounces. That would get you about 33 bottles at a cost of about 73 cents each. Keep in mind that’s custom brewed beer. You control every aspect of taste and flavor

Even on a good day you’re lucky if you can get a 6pack of beer for $5 and that’s pretty low quality beer. A six back of Samuel Adams Cherry or Coastal Wheat which is pretty close quality to this beer will run me about $7 after tax to a tune of about $1.17/bottle compared to our cost of $0.73/bottle and we get to control the flavor.

Notice I’m not factoring in the cost of water. I use Ozarka water because we subscribe to that service anyway and always have more than we can drink. If i were to figure that into the cost it would take my total cost for the batch to 32.50 and our price per bottle to 98 cents each, still significantly lower than retail. However, You don’t have to use Ozarka water. Tap water run through a brita (or other carbon) filter will work just as well. The cost of filtering the water yourself makes water a negligable expense.

The blueberries and honey are also optional expense. If you leave them out you’ll still have a perfectly good wheat beer. If I were going to do that I would have used about 6# of wheat extract though. Bulk extract runs me $2.79/# so that would be 16.74(extract)+$3(hops&yeast) to $19.74 batch total. If that yeilds 33 bottles that means you’re paying right at 60 cents per bottle. The whole point of brewing at home though is for flavor and control thereof so I naturally opt for the honey and blueberries.
