I have just attempted my first batch of home brew wine. I followed the instructions, but left out the clarifying solution unintentionally last week. I realised my mistake when I was about to bottle, corrected this and left it for another week. The SG is 0.986. Is this bad? How do I check the alcohol level? It tastes OK, smells a little vinegary. Any help would be appreciated, I thank you in advance (:))

Taste is the ultimate determinant of quality. The S.G. seems to me a little high but give it time wine is like that.

I want to buy a home brewing kit (beer) for my boyfriend for christmas. I dont know the first thing about this… What do i need to buy, how much roughly?

He likes becks beer, XXXX gold beer, white stag beer. Can you get a brew kit for those specific beers…

Help me out so i can get my head around this…. thanks!!!

Visit a homebrew supply store and buy an equipment kit from them.

Lagers are harder to make than ales. You need stricter temperature control for lagers than ales. They also take a lot longer

Buy the kit and have your boyfriend make ales first.

Making beer, airlock question?

Posted in Beer Making Kits by admin December 31st, 2009

I bought a beer making kit, and in the instructions it didn’t say to put the airlock on the big plastic bucket. I now look on the internet and it says that I should have one on there. I made it Friday evening and I put it on this morning, so it’s been in contact with the air for 3.5 days. Will this ruin the batch?

It may ruin your batch only if the yeast was not very active.

If the yeast was active enough it will have pushed the air out by realeasing CO2. You may have gotten the airlock on in time.

Give it a taste before you bottle it, it should taste like flat beer and a little sweet. If it tastes nasty it was infected, It will be hard to tell by looking at it since it is in a bucket. In glass you will see what looks like strings coming down from the top.
