HOME BEER BREWING QUESTION?

Posted in Home Brewing Instructions by admin November 30th, 2009

My boyfriend is brewing his own beer for the first time. He didn’t have enough bottles so it sat in the bucket for almost three weeks longer than the instructions said. Is the entire batch going to be ruined or will it be fine to drink? No ridiculous, teenage, immature responses please.

It should be OK, if anything it may turn into more of a stout drink. Beer normally is around 4 to 6 % alcohol but some beers may run up to 20 %. The longer it brews the stronger it becomes. Just as the longer it is in the bottle and ages the better it becomes. I used to use Grolsch bottles. I bought a bunch of them at the distribution plant in Grand Rapids Mi. for .10 cents each, the price of the returnable bottle. They have a cap with a rubber seal and can be used over and over again.
See the following link for an example, they worked well for me.

Have fun making beer. I used to enjoy it a lot. The hardest part is waiting at least 4 weeks before opening a bottle. Three months is better but it’s hard to wait that long.
If you can find it COOPERS DRAUGH was my favorite mix to buy. I never got into buying and mixing hops and malts. I did find that using filtered water makes the best beer. DON’T use city water.

I’ve been interested in trying this for a while, and I don’t know the first thing. Figured I’d start with whether I can even set one up in the basement.

Unheated basements are great places for wine and beer, if you have a sink and stove down there.. The space you need depends on the supplies and doodads you keep around. A kit for one or the other only takes up about 3 cubic feet. Add a second bucket if you want to do both wine and beer. Eventually, you will add a glass carboy. You also need room for bottle storage, both full and empty ones. Figure two cases of pints per batch of beer. Some people add a dedicated refrigerator. You can use a large stock-pot from your kitchen until you take the plunge and get a huge one just for the beer. Add another couple of cubic feet for supplies you buy in bulk. Also reserve a couple of inches of bookshelf space for Papazian’s book, The New Complete Guide to Home Brewing and for the notebook you keep your records in. Come to think of it, turn your whole house into a brewery/winery.
